WIRRAL musician Cal Ruddy wrote a letter to West Kirby School to thank everyone for their contributions to help get him to America.

The school held a fundraising event for former pupil Cal to fulfil his dream of performing during San Diego Beatles Week.

The school’s fundraiser for Cal also highlighted the importance ofsupporting young people with hidden disabilities and was hoped the night would inspire others to promote awareness of children with disabilities and embrace their talents.

Due to ill-health Cal couldn’t make it over to the States at that time but has promised the money raised will go towards his trip to Nashville in September.

Cal wrote this letter to the school: “From the bottom of my heart I would like to personally thank you all for your contribution towards my trip to America.

"Unfortunately, as some of you will know, a week after the fundraising event at WKS I was admitted to hospital, with just under a couple of weeks to go until I flew out to the States and I didn't get discharged until a few days before I was supposed to leave and I still was very fragile.

“I got really down once I was told that medically, I wasn't safe to travel. But, everything happens for a reason.

"However, I would like to thank all of the staff and lovely volunteers who gave up their time to not only help with the fundraiser, but organise the raffle, sell the food and drinks, and all of the amazing performers.

“All of your extremely kind donations from the event totalled an amazing £1,100 and that on top of all other donations made by the public and the really kind £500 donated by the Staff at WKS from their Lottery Fund, means that my total at the moment is £4,220.

"Each and every penny of this money will still be going towards my trip to America to promote my music.

“In September, I will be flying out to Nashville to work with some of the best producers and songwriters and will also be playing some gigs in really prestigious venues, which is really exciting.

"I hope you all continue to follow me along my journey and I will come back in to discuss it all with you once I'm home.

“Take it from me, I've had it all, the up's and the down's, there's been times I've wanted to throw in the towel because I didn't believe in myself. But trust me, and don't ever give up on yourself. You're in a place right now were you're surrounded by the best staff there are in the best school you'll get.

“If you have a talent, whether it be music, fashion or art go for it and don't ever stop.

“Both myself and my family will never ever forget all of your kindness in supporting me along the way and I hope I make you all proud."
