DETECTIVES investigating reports of a sex assault in Wirral have launched an appeal for witnesses.

Police were contacted on Tuesday night, following reports that a female had been attacked the prevous evening in a field off Birkenhead Road near to the junction with Hoylake Road.

The investigation is in its very early stages and house-to-house enquiries have been carried out in the local area.

As part of the investigation detectives are looking to trace the occupant of a blue car which was seen in the vicinity.

They are appealing for anyone who was in the area, known locally as the 'Meols stretch', between the traffic lights at Millhouse Lane in Moreton and a local kennels, between 4pm and 7pm on Monday evening, and who may have dash-cam footage, to come forward.

Detective Inspector Susan Ennis said: "This is an ongoing investigation and we are following a number of lines of enquiry including reports of a blue car in the area, seen acting suspiciously.

"I would ask anyone who may have been in the area on Monday evening, and has dash-cam footage to come forward as it may be vital to our investigation."
