DETECTIVES have launched an investigation into reports of a sexual assault in a Wirral field.

Police were called on Tuesday night, following reports that a female had been assaulted between 5.45pm and 6.30pm, on Monday, in a field off Birkenhead Road, Meols, near its junction with Hoylake Road.

 Merseyside Police said: "The investigation is in its very early stages and specially trained officers are preparing to interview the female and are carrying out house-to-house investigations in the local area.

"The area has been cordoned off to allow for the investigation to take place".
