CHILDREN from primary schools across Wirral became investigators for the day as part of a special history project.

Taking place at Birkenhead Park School, Discover Birkenhead was a chance for year five pupils to learn about the history of the school as well as Birkenhead and its community.

It aimed to give children realistic snippets of history from historical figures such as John Laird and Andrew Irvine, to a ghost from the war.

Actors and teachers dressed in authentic costumes to help the children, who were given four investigations focussing on finding out about Birkenhead Park, the impact of World Wars I and II, famous people of the local area and the history of The Birkenhead Park School itself.

In groups they created timelines to preserve the history for future generations.

Year five pupil Andrew from Devonshire Park Primary said: "I learnt loads about the area I have grown up in which I never knew.

"It makes you realise how inspiring the history of Birkenhead is."

The event is organised by the year 7 team as part of the school's primary liaison work.

Head of year seven, Mrs Pauline Kirwan said: "We put a lot of time into ensuring this event is both fun and educational for the children.

"The feedback is always fantastic from both staff and pupils who attend and it is great to see them learning about the history of the school and of the local area of Birkenhead."

Green room technology was also used to take pictures of the pupils in costumes onto historic backdrops - something to give them a lasting memento from the day.

Layla, from Portland Primary said: "It has been really interesting and I have learnt a lot about the war and its impact on ordinary people."

Macy from Woodlands Primary said: "I have had a really good time. The actors were really funny and I have learnt a lot.

"I really enjoyed the green screen and seeing everyone dressed up."

Twelve schools took part in 'Discover Birkenhead' at The Birkenhead Park School over a four day period.

Barbara Cannell, who is a former student of the school and now teaches at Devonshire Park School said: "It was lovely to be back in the school.

"Happy memories came flooding back and it has been fantastic seeing the children smiling and enjoying themselves so much."
