POLICE attended an incident at Woodside Ferry terminal following concern for the safety for two men in Birkenhead.

Emergency services were called to ferry terminal at around 9.15am today after reports of a concern for safety for two men who were calling for help in the River Mersey.

A 22-year-old man was recovered from the water by the Marine Fire One rescue boat and was taken to hospital.

He is believed to be conscious and breathing.

The second man is yet to be found and has been reported missing.

A spokeswoman from Merseyside Police said: "Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, the coastguard and North West Ambulance Service attended.

"One man was taken to safety at 9.20am and to hospital for further treatment.

"His condition is described as stable.

"A search was carried out for the second man who has now been reported missing.

"An investigation is currently ongoing."

Mersey Ferry services were also suspended at the request of emergency services.
