A MAN who shot a pigeon near a primary school in Birkenhead this morning is being hunted by police.

Police were called to Woodchurch Road at around 8.45am by a member of the public, who reported seeing a man in the vicinity of Wirral Christian Centre with what looked like a firearm.

Pupils from nearby Christ Church CofE Primary school were kept indoors by staff while the incident was investigated.

Initial police enquiries ascertained that a man in possession of what was believed to be an air weapon had shot a pigeon in the street and left the scene.

The school was then advised that the area was clear and the incident was closed.

Officers will visit the school later this afternoon to offer reassurance to pupils and parents.

Headteacher Mrs Marie Szydlowska told the Globe: "On advice from the police and local authority, I am pleased to say that the school is now continuing as normal and all children have continued with their day.

"The school has followed the advice of Merseyside Police and the procedures of the local authority.

"As always, the safeguarding of our pupils at all times has been of paramount importance".

An investigation is continuing into the man's whereabouts.

Anybody with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
