THE 19th Wirral Bikeathon takes place this weekend in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma research.

More than 1,000 people have signed up for the Globe-backed event, taking place in Arrowe Park on Sunday.

It is the second under the banner of Bloodwise - the new name for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

So far, it has raised more than £800,000 for the fight to beat blood cancer and its the organisers want to break the £1m barrier.

On the day there will be live music from the Peninsula Jazzmen and the Ukulele band.

Around 1,400 people took part in last year’s event, raising more than £40,000 for research into blood cancer.

Wirral's Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Chris Boardman is patron of the Bikeathon.

He said: "Since the Wirral Bikeathon started 19 years ago we have raised £880,000 towards beating blood cancer.

"We are aiming to get across the £1million mark for funds raised for Bloodwise, the leading blood cancer charity.

"It's a great family event so do come along and support us."

Event organiser John Osman added: "We are looking forward to seeing all our riders come together in support of Bloodwise this weekend.

"We hope that everyone enjoys the Bikeathon as much this year as in past years - look at Twitter #wirralbikeathon to see what fun it is.

"And we hope it will be another record breaking year for our fund raising.

Giant flea market 

HULME Hall in Port Sunlight is hosting a giant flea market this Sunday, June 11.

Why not while away a few hours browsing the many stalls, promising bric-a-brac, collectables and bargains galore.

Open studios tour

ARTISTS across the borough will throw open their studio doors to the public during the eighth annual Wirral Open Studio Tour showcase this weekend.

Taking place on Saturday and Sunday, June 10-11, it's your chance to see and talk to painters, photographers, printmakers, potters, glass designers, illustrators and textile artists at work.

A spokeswoman for the organisers said: "We hope the informal and relaxing setting of the event will allow visitors to understand our artists’ inspirations and creative techniques, share in their passion for creative arts and help celebrate this eminently popular culture-filled Wirral weekend".

Flaybrick walk

A GUIDED walk through Flaybrick Memorial Gardens in Bidston takes place on Saturday morning.

On the day there will be chance to see recently-completed work on the chapels and visit the grave of Edward Kemp, the man who influenced the design of New York’s Central Park.

If you would like to take part in the walk, meet at nearby Tam O'Shanter’s urban farm at 11am on Saturday.

Museum open day

A VICTORIAN open day celebrating 125 years of West Kirby Museum takes place at the venue in St Bridget's Centre, St Bridget's Lane, West Kirby this Saturday.

During the event, there will be traditional games, a Victorian School, exhibition, history talks and Victorian Teas.

It takes place from 10am to 4pm and admission is free.

Festival of rugby

A Festival of Rugby for Women and Girls takes place at Oldershaw Rugby Club in Wallasey this Saturday, June 10.

It starts at 11am and finals will be played between 3-4pm.

There will also be a BBQ, Mr Tee Ice cream, Bouncy castles and trampolines as well as a licenced bar for adults.

Summer fair

Wallasey Ladybirds' summer fair will be held at the Grosvenor Ballroom in Liscard this Saturday, June 10. It starts at 1pm.

There will be various stalls and refreshments in aid of local charities.

Neston U3A meeting

The History of Eastern European Dance - an afternoon of oriental delight is the subject of a talk being given to Neston U3A later this month.

The group meets at Neston Civic Hall on Thursday, June 29 at 2pm. All are welcome.

Golden age of TV

BARRY Humphreys will give an illustrated talk entitled What Was On The Telly? as West Wirral Family History Group’s guest next Wednesday, June 14.

A look at those golden early years of Television, it takes place at Westbourne Community Centre, Westbourne Road, West Kirby, CH48 4DQ. Starts at 2pm. Admission is £2, including refreshments.

Eastern art

A unique 'East Meets West' exhibition by local artist Sushil Kumar Datta is now on view at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead.

The display, by the former textile designer looks at his early days in India, his journey to the UK and his career as a creator of fabrics and wallpapers for various major companies. It is on view until July 2.

Time to meditate

"Meditation and mindfulness" classes are held at Hoylake Community Centre every Thursday.

Junior table tennis

WIRRAL premier table tennis club, based at New Ferry Village Hall, is looking for new members.

The aim of the club aim is to promote table tennis locally and to encourage youngsters to try a sport that is not generally seen as the norm for them.

A BIBLE society family picnic takes place in the garden of St Hildeburgh's Vicarage in Stanley Road, Hoylake this Saturday from 1pm to 3pm.

It will be a chance to support the society's work, with fun and games for the children. Bring your own food, but ice creams and drinks available.

There is no admission charge, but a minimum donation of £2 is suggested per family.

Choral society
