MORE than 1,000 people have now signed up for this weekend's Wirral Bikeathon in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma research - and there is still time to join them.

The Globe-backed event, now in its 19th year, takes place this Sunday, June 11.

It is the second under the banner of Bloodwise - the new name for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

So far, it has raised more than £800,000 for the fight to beat blood cancer and its the organisers want to break the £1m barrier.

On the day there will be live music from the Peninsula Jazzmen and the Ukulele band.

Around 1,400 people took part in last year’s event, raising more than £40,000 for research into blood cancer.

Wirral's Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Chris Boardman is patron of the Bikeathon.

He said: "Since the Wirral Bikeathon started 19 years ago we have raised £880,000 towards beating blood cancer.

"We are aiming to get across the £1million mark for funds raised for Bloodwise, the leading blood cancer charity.

"It's a great family event so do come along and support us."

Event organiser John Osman added: "We are looking forward to seeing all our riders come together in support of Bloodwise this weekend.

"We hope that everyone enjoys the Bikeathon as much this year as in past years - look at Twitter #wirralbikeathon to see what fun it is.

"And we hope it will be another record breaking year for our fund raising.

"If you haven't signed up you can still come along and support us by registering on the day between 9.30am and 11.30am at Arrowe Park".
