MERSEYRAIL have announced that armed officers will be patrolling trains and stations across Merseyside.

The announcement comes after the British Transport Police released details of specially trained firearms officers patrolling on board train services after the UK threat level was raised to critical.

This mobilisation is part of the British Transport Police’s plan to ensure that travelling public are kept safe on the rail network.

These measures were put in place by the government in response to the terror attack in Manchester Arena on Monday which killed 22 people and injured 59.

A spokeswoman from Merseyrail said: "Passengers should keep travelling as normal.

"There is no specific threat affecting the rail industry, but following the suicide attack in Manchester, security has been increased across the network as a precaution.

"More security and police officers are patrolling trains and stations, some of whom will be armed and some will have police dogs.

"We hope this will reassure people.

"Our advice is to be alert, but not alarmed.

"If anyone does notice anything unusual, they should speak to a member of staff immediately."

In case of an emergency call 999 or contact the British Transport Police directly by telephoning or texting 61016.
