A WIRRAL youngster captained his country to victory for the European trophy in 8-ball pool.

Leighton McDonnell, 13, a student at St John Plessington High School has been representing Merseyside at under 15 level for two years and travelled to the European Championships in Bridlington in Week 1 of the event in Bridlington.

The student fought to keep his spot at the top of the leader board after winning both the European and world championships last year.

Searching for success Leighton’s ‘A’ team England squad doubled up against Scotland snatching a 8-4 victory.

After a winning start Leighton and team mate Suraj Rai lost to fellow England duo Owen Dodd and Kian Monaghan 5-2.

The International Pool championships has been held in Bridlington since 2000 and attracts some of the top players from the UK and all over Europe including France and Spain.

The European Blackball championships draws around 800 participants and runs over 10 days.
