MERSEYSIDE fire service has warned of the dangers of discarding rubbish at beauty spots after a gorse and tree blaze on Bidston Hill this morning.

Firefighters were called to the scene at around 11.50am and found an area around 15 by 20 metres alight. The fire had started accidentally.

A fire service spokeswoman told the Globe: "Firefighters are typically called out to an increased number of grass fires at this time of year and throughout the summer months as the nights get lighter and the weather gets warmer.

"Grass fires are not always deliberately-started as they can be caused by a number of things including carelessly-discarded cigarettes, discarded disposable barbecues, tin foil or glass.

"We would urge anyone who sees a fire of this nature to call 999 and report it to the fire service immediately. They should not attempt to put it out themselves.

"Never leave camp fires or barbecues unattended and always make sure they are extinguished properly after you have finished using them.

"Clear away bottles, glasses, broken glass or tin foil to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.

"Dispose of smoking materials safely and always explain to children the dangers playing with, and lighting, fires.

"Grass fires can potentially cause huge damage to property and wildlife.

"If you see a grass fire, call 999 straight away and let Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service know where the fire is".
