Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious assault on a 20-year-old man in Tranmere.

The victim was found with a head injury following what was understood to be a targeted attack on Borough Road near to Tesco Metro and the David Pluck bookmakers at around 10.45am on Wednesday.

Members of the public went to his assistance and called emergency services.

The victim was taken to Walton hospital, Liverpool, where his condition is currently described as serious.

Detective Inspector Mike Dalton said: "This was a very serious assault, committed in broad daylight and we are keen to speak to witnesses who could help us find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

"We particularly want to trace a blonde haired lady who attended to the victim and customers of the bookmakers who also provided first-aid at the scene.

"If they could come forward as a matter of urgency this could form a vital part of our inquiry into who was responsible."
