GP practices across Wirral have reopened after a major cyber-attack.

But some report they still do not have full access to patient records, prescriptions or appointment systems - and in some cases telephone systems.

Many surgeries are still bringing their IT and clinical systems back online.

However all will be using "well-tested contingency plans" to ensure services can continue to be provided.

Last Friday NHS staff across the UK were locked out of their computers and many trusts were forced to divert patients.

The NHS was among hundreds of organisations affected around the world, with 47 trusts hit.

Wirral University NHS Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust said on Friday the virus was not on any of their systems and this remains the case today.

The NHS is asking patients to continue to "use services wisely" and is reminding people they can seek help and advice from other sources such as pharmacies or 111.

The cyber attack is the biggest of its kind ever launched, security chiefs have said.

More than 200,000 victims in 150 countries have been registered so far, with warnings the impact could spread further on Monday.

In its latest update on the incident, Europol said it was the “largest ransomware attack observed in history.”

The EU’s law enforcement body said threats of this type do not normally spread so rapidly.

“It started its assault against hospitals across the UK and shortly after spilled across the globe,” the agency said.

“Once a machine is infected it will scan the entire internal network and infect other vulnerable machines.”

There are no indications that a particular country or organisation has been targeted, and the threat is “spreading globally”, according to Europol.

It said the unique features of the WannaCry ransomware are its two main components - a “worm functionality” and the ransomware itself.

Europol said: “This is the first ever detected malware combining these features, which makes it unique.”

A large-scale international investigation has been launched as police attempt to identify perpetrators of the attack.
