Wirral Schoolboys U15s Football team have become the first team from the borough to win the ESFA Boys PlayStation Inter Association Trophy.

They beat Swansea SFA 2:1 in the game played at Birmingham City’s ground, St. Andrew’s, on Thursday May 4.

The game saw Swansea attacking the Wirral goal from the whistle requiring keeper Michael Kinsella to make one of many impressive saves.

Led by captain Luke Robinson, Wirral took control of the game and by the end of the first half they were up by two goals due to decisive finishing from Liam Atherton and Liam Kelly.

The second half saw continued pressure with darting runs down both flanks from Thomas Taaffe and George Nugent, feeding Jack Gibson & Jake Bickerstaff whilst Daniel Edwards and Francis Ward impressively controlled the midfield.

The Wirral schoolboys kept control of the game with second half keeper Sean Greathead showing great skill between the sticks.

Despite a goal from Swansea and a strong finish, the back line of William McKechnie, Owen Payne, Max Herbert and Aaron Rainbow-Adams ensured that Wirral’s name would be engraved onto this historic trophy for the first time.

Their journey to the final saw them overcome Trafford, South Cheshire, Preston, Sheffield, Allerdale and local rivals Liverpool to reach this prestigious final.

Team manager and association director Will Rowlands said: “These boys have created history that will never be forgotten.

"They delivered a game plan to perfection and thoroughly deserved the victory.

"The pride I have in these players is overwhelming and I am just so happy for every single one of them.”

Assistant manager Lee Robinson said: “This is a very special and resilient group of young footballers who are determined more than ever to show people that Wirral are a team to be feared.

"They have such a close bond with each other and genuinely want to play together and achieve together.

"Every one of them has played their part in our success to date.”

Before picking up their medals and the trophy, there were screams of laughter in the dressing room at the end of the game as the boys shaved their manager's hair off, honouring a commitment made at the start of the season.

Along with coaches Kevin Holsgrove and Joe Saunders and Physio Lucinda Bell the team were strongly supported with supporters travelling to the Midlands to cheer on the boys and help them bring the cup back to Wirral.
