BUSINESS owners in New Ferry have praised the town's 'overwhelming' community spirit as businesses and residents rebuild their lives after the devastating gas explosion.

Kay Finlay, managing director of Bebington Glazing, which is situated outside the blast site cordon, said spirit and drive to move forward had been 'overwhelming' since the blast on March 25, which saw New Ferry’s high street severely damaged.

Yesterday, David Ball, Wirral's assistant director of environmental services, told the Globe that business premises damaged may have to be demolished, following an assesment by structural engineers.

The owners of homes at 1-9 Underley Terrace, 2-8 Boundary Road and 45 -55 Bebington Road were also told their properties will be repaired. The next steps for properties at 56-74 Bebington Road are still to be decided.

Kay Finlay, from Bebington Glazing, said: "The explosion has not only impacted several local businesses but also a significant number of homeowners just across the road from our offices.

"Unfortunately, the impact of the incident means that there are still residents who are unable to access their homes or re-open their businesses because the damage is so severe.

"Despite what's happened, it's been wonderful to see so many locals join forces to help and to support one another.

"As part of a long list of inspiring efforts from within the community, initiatives such as fundraising group have been put in to place and those in need have already welcomed many donations.

"Although we're still trying to process what's happened, we hope that moving forward, New Ferry comes back stronger than ever and begins to move towards its regeneration as we rebuild our community".

As part of its efforts to support those affected, the company is currently working alongside five local businesses to repair and restore their shop fronts and broken glass.

Sue Evans, owner of nearby Baxter's Meats, which, luckily, is also situated outside the blast zone, said: "Although New Ferry’s recent explosion was disastrous for many local businesses and residents, it's certainly heart-warming to see such a diverse group of people come together to support one another and champion what remains to be such a thriving area in Wirral – I’m very proud of our town and its inhabitants".

Kassandra Lee, Owner of Pattons Jewellers said: “Following such a devastating incident in New Ferry, our residents and business owners are feeling overwhelmed with the amount of support we have received from one another.

"In the wake of a truly awful event, we hope this will be a turning point for our town as we look towards the future.”

Susan Blakeborough, owner of The Flower Girl added: "With such a diverse cohort of businesses located in the New Ferry area, it's wonderful to see how so many have come together to provide a strong and supportive network for one another.”
