A WIRRAL man is set to celebrate his 104th birthday this weekend surrounded by his family.

Tom Peers from Seacombe was born on April 30 1913 and was stationed in the Middle East during the second world war working as a chef.

A butcher by trade Tom retired more than 40 years ago and enjoys playing cards with his three children, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Tom’s granddaughter Jessica Clarke told the Globe: “He’ll be turning 104 with a special dinner with all his family.

“He’s a bit doddery on his feet now but has no ailments except being hard of hearing.

“It’s a shame because he’s not entitled to any recognition from the Queen until he turns 105.

“Now he is living in sheltered accommodation and is fiercely independent.

“The stories he can recall from the past including his time in Egypt during WWII are fantastic and great to hear.

“He now spends his time watching the soaps on television and chatting away, he’s very sociable and has a great sense of humour.

“For the incredible life he has lead he really deserves some recognition. He truly is one special man and I’m so proud he’s my granddad.”
