MERSEYSIDE Police will be joining officers across Europe in carrying out speed checks across the county.

The 'Speed Enforcement Marathon' initiative will run for 24-hours across Europe and officers in Merseyside will be focussing on areas in Merseyside voted for by members of the public through Twitter.

The action today  forms part of a week-long speed enforcement operation led by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police network.

The areas which have been chosen are as follows:

  • Kings Lane
  • Leasowe Road
  • Whetstone Lane
  • Noctorum Ave
  • Old Chester Road
  • Highfield Road
  • Prenton Lane
  • Teehey Lane

Officers will use handheld speed detection devices and unmarked video motorcycles and cars.

Last year nearly 2.5 million cars were stopped across Europe with 95% of drivers adhering to speed limits.

Sergeant Dave Yorke from the Roads Policing team said: "The purpose of tomorrow's activity is prevention and reduction of risk.

"We are publishing the exact locations of each checkpoint in advance so drivers think ahead about the speed at which they travel, both to protect themselves and other road users.

"We have been listening to our communities through social media and will be targeting those areas highlighted to us.

"Drivers often look at traffic operations as easy money-making schemes for the police, but the opposite is true.

"We want to educate people about the dangers of speeding, not hit them in the pocket."
