Commuters are advised there are severe delays with two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident and shed load of two concrete barriers weighing 3.5 tonnes each on M6 southbound between J19 A556 (Knutsford) and J18 A54 (Middlewich).

Travel time is around 90 minutes.

Lanes two and three remain closed.

Recovery using a specialist crane has been arranged to remove the shed barriers.

A brief rolling road block was put in place to allow recovery vehicles to the scene allowing to pass in lane one.

Highways England is working with the North West Motorway Group to reopen the lanes as soon as it is safe to do so.

A spokesman said: "Removing the concrete blocks requires a specialist crane, which will take some time.

"Work to move the blocks is underway with the aim of reopening a second lane while further recovery work takes place in the outside lane."
