A MULTI-AGENCY investigation is now being carried out to establish the cause of the New Ferry explosion.

Emergency services were called at around 9pm to the junction of Boundary Road and Circular Drive in New Ferry on Saturday.

Thirty four people were injured, two seriously in the blast which forced the evacuation of people from the area to a nearby church.

Several buildings collapsed including “Complete Works” dance studio and Lan’s House Chinese restaurant.

The investigation will be carried out by Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Wirral Council, the health and Safety Executive and National Grid.

Firefighters searched all of the properties affected by the explosion and dogs from Merseyside and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service searched the collapsed buildings and debris.

Superintendent Ian Hassall said: “Merseyside Police is carrying out a joint investigation with Merseyside Fire and Rescue, the Health and Safety Executive, National Grid and Wirral Council to establish the cause of the explosion, which resulted in two people being seriously injured and more than 30 people requiring medical attention.

“Work is also ongoing with our colleagues at Wirral council to ensure that the area around the explosion site is made safe as soon as possible and that roads are reopened and people are able to return to their homes, or collect their belongings as a priority.

“I would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding while this work is being carried out.”

Road closures remain in place on New Chester Road at the junction of Bebington Road and junction of Circular Drive at the junction of Osbourne Close.
