WALKERS were rescued from Hilbre islands after getting into difficulties while attempting to return to shore.

West Kirby RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was sent into action at around 10am on Sunday after the group of nine people and a dog were stranded knee-high in water.

They were attempting to cross the sandbanks back to land but underestimated the height of the tide and found safety on Middle Eye.

The volunteer crew launched within 15 minutes and escorted the group in two trips to Dee Lane.

RNLI operations manager for West Kirby Dave Henshaw said: “It is important that visitors to Hilbre check the tidal information before setting out and to take appropriate clothing and refreshments.

“There is information concerning tide times on the noticeboard opposite the ice-cream kiosk at Dee Lane end of the Marine Lake.

“It is important to respect the water and to guard against hazardous situations.”
