RESIDENTS have been speaking of their anger following a number of attacks on cars in Moreton last weekend.

On Sunday night there was at least eight cars which had their windows smashed, items stolen and damage to wing mirrors and number plates of cars.

Ten cars are said to have been targeted in the chaos.

Although most incidents are unwitnessed, it is believed that five men were seen on Bermuda Road around 11.30pm on Saturday night and were chased off by a member of the public.

The reign of terror has been ongoing for more than two weeks and one reader, Grantham, told us: “A couple of weeks ago I had my car broken in to at midnight and a number of items had been taken.

“There has been a lot of action on Millhouse lane, Bermuda Road and Burden Road.

“I had gone shopping on Sunday morning and saw about eight cars on the road and in drives which had had damage done to them. It looks like someone had deliberately put their foot through the windscreen and smashed the window.

“I’ve lived in the area for 18 years and never seen anything like this. Something has to be done. Last year my neighbours had similar things happen to them but there’s not been anything on this scale.

“With all the cuts it’s hard but there needs to be more police patrols in the streets and town to put the culprits off committing this type of damage – it isn’t as if they’re taking expensive things either, the damage is worth more than what they’ve taken from me.

“I didn’t hear any alarms on Saturday and it was quite quiet, it was only at around midnight that people started coming out of the pub and there was a little bit of noise.

“I’m seriously looking at putting up cameras around my house. I don’t want to but this is what it has come to. This is senseless vandalism that must be stopped. There’s absolutely no reason for it.”

After both of her daughters’ cars were vandalised, one woman said: “They’d gone to watch a band at a local pub and then when they came home they had spotted that their cars had been targeted - one had its windscreen smashed and the other, its wing mirror kicked off.

“I can’t believe what is happening. Something needs to be done.”

House-to-house and CCTV enquiries are ongoing and police say they will increase police presence in the area to provide reassurance.

Local Policing inspector Paul Harrison said: "These incidents are completely unacceptable and we are determined to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

"The stress and inconvenience that this type of crime causes to victims is and I would urge anyone with information to do the right thing and come forward, whether you know who is involved or witnessed anything on Saturday night.

"We are also keen to speak to anyone from Burden Road and Bermuda Road who has CCTV in their homes and may have captured footage of the offenders, which may be vital to our enquiries."

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, or the Crimestoppers line anonymously and for free on 0800 555 111.
