Police have confirmed the body of a man aged in his 50s has been recovered from the River Mersey at Egremont.
Emergency services assembled at the promenade around 2pm today.
The authorities have not yet identified the deceased.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "At 1.50pm a call was received from a member of the public who reported seeing a body in the water close to the shore at Egremont.

"Police, ambulance and the fire service attended and the body of a man, initially believed to be in his 50s, was recovered.
"He was pronounced deceased at the scene."
Two fire engines were at the scene together with the search and rescue team, Coastguard and Marine Fire One rescue boat.
Inquiries are underway to identify the man and establish the full circumstances of his death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.
