A WIRRAL amateur boxing club will hold its third annual tournament this weekend.

Seacombe Allandale boxing club's show will take place at Wallasey Town Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The group was formed three and half years ago by head coach Danny Jones.

Its team of backroom staff features ex-professional boxers Kevin McCann and Tommy Jones. Its president is former world champion John H Stracey.

It is situated in the former home of Wallasey boys club.

Founder Danny Jones told the Globe: "When forming the club, we all had a common goal of opening an amateur boxing club in Seacombe with a view of keeping young people out of trouble and away from crime using the tool of boxing to channel dedication discipline and structure in a fun atmosphere - hence Seacombe Allandale boxing club was formed.

"What started out with an old punch bag hanging in a disused youth club has now transformed into today's fully affiliated amateur boxing club.

"This developing club has won Merseyside and Cheshire development titles every year since opening in 2014 with two of the boys winning the title twice.

"Both boys were completely un-boxed and brand-new to competitive boxing before joining the gym.

"Lewis Mullineux is now the current Merseyside and Cheshire development class A champion for the second time.

"He then travelled to London picking up a silver medal at the Haringey box cup.

"He has also gone on to be chosen for England boxing new talent pathway.

"Danny Potts won the development title in 2015 and then retained the same title in 2016.

"From a standing start in 2014 the club had a total of over 100 bouts in 2016 - with some fantastic junior and school boy boxers now coming through - the club has grown from strength to strength and is modern day success story of what can be achieved in the local area."

Seacombe boxing club is open to all girls and boys from nine and above Monday - Friday from 5pm onwards.

Saturday's tournament at Wallasey Town Hall starts at 1pm. Admission is £10, payable on the door
