THE suspect at the centre of a siege in Birkenhead today had barricaded himself into a room with an eight-month-old baby and was armed with a machete and a crossbow.
Armed officers were called to Raffles Road after police had earlier attempted to arrest a man suspected of cannabis cultivation and were threatened by him.
A "containment" was placed around the property to ensure the safety of those in the house and neighbours.
Raffles Road was closed from around 8am while the incident was ongoing.
Specialist negotiators attended to persuade the man to come out.
At 2.20pm a 25-year-old man from Prenton was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, affray and drug-related offences.
He has been taken to a police station where he will be questioned by detectives.
Several weapons were recovered from the property - including a crossbow and a machete.
A search of the house is ongoing.
The baby was taken from the house safe and well.
Police thanked residents for their patience and understanding throughout this incident.
They also thanked the Globe for our co-operation and support while sensitive negotiations were ongoing to ensure the safety of the baby.
