THE Globe's online readers have reacted to Wirral Council's plans for new parking charges - and emphatically they are not impressed.

Earlier this week we revealed how residents are about to be hit by a £1m pay-to-park bombshell designed to "generate income" for the town hall.

The controversial new parking tarifs are being brought in as the authority says Government cuts mean it must slash spending by £132m over the next four years.

The council believes it can raise extra cash by:

A 50p per hour increase in existing car parks.

Charging for on-street parking in West Wirral.

Pay and display at Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton.

Bringing in a new £4 per day parking charge for Wirral's country parks.

Introducing parking charges at nine other locations across the borough.

Now here's what our online readers think...

WirralAl As always this stupid council are trying to sting us all again.

Such a disgrace. If they want to save money get rid of 33 councillors.

Elis: Reduce its spending by £132m? Can we have a detailed breakdown as to exactly where spending has gone, as its certainly not on things such as roads, street cleaning, general upkeep of areas.

Bigfoot:They can't use car parking fees to generate income for the council as it is illegal.

Mind you, since when has that bothered them!

Go ahead and kill off the "Leisure Penninsula"  and while we are at it when are you going to introduce parking fees at the municipal golf courses?

We are not wallets on wheels!

Peter Byers: I would love to know how much the council has wasted so far on the Hoylake golf resort and the ludicrous idea to implement food waste recycling when the government are telling us to stop wasting food.

Mismanagement is the root of the problems the council find themselves with.

GC46: Councils have seen how easy hospitals generate funds from parking and think they have a 'captive audience's to make money for them with parking charges.

Cheshire West are doing the same thing. It may make money on the first visit but will visitors return knowing there is a cost?

Jonna: I think this suggestion is counter productive and will discourage residents and visitors going to New Brighton.

John: If they introduce new charges for parking then a lot of people will not go to that park or shops.

This will hit local businesses and reduce business rates and jobs.

The main ones to benefit from the charges will be the private firm that the council are bound to bring in to run the parking charges.

If we have to pay more then rather than have more people who are in effect tax and fine collectors, then it would be better to increase existing taxes.
