A motorcyclist is critically ill in hospital following a serious crash near Woodchurch this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to reports of a motorbike crash on the M53 southbound carriageway on the roundabout just before 1.30pm.
The man was taken to Aintree University Hospital by ambulance after suffering major trauma injuries before being transferred to Walton a short time after 3pm.
Accident investigators are at the scene and there are extensive road closures in place.
No other vehicles were involved.
Drivers are being told to avoid the area where possible the M53 junction three exit road is closed south bound.
Traffic is also at a standstill through the North Cheshire Industrial Estate. As a result of the road closures there is heavy traffic on Woodchurch Road.
Police are urging anyone with any information about the incident to contact the Roads Policing Team via 101.
