READERS are being urged to donate unused dog items to the RSPCA ahead of a community event at Birkenhead’s Charles Thompson Mission.

Initially launching the scheme to help homeless people look after their dogs, the RSPCA realised the event should be expanded for anyone who is struggling to look after their pets during the Christmas period.

The charity is asking for dog food, treats, new blankets and bedding, toys, leads or collars to be donated the mission or RSPCA branches in Chester, Cross Lane and Wallasey.

Hollie Jones from Upton Veterinary Surgery will join RSPCA inspector Anthony Joynes and local animal centre manager Kay Hawthorn next Wednesday, December 14 ,from 10.30am, at the homeless centre in Hemingford Street.

They will be providing free health checks pets, flea and worming treatment, neutering vouchers, food and bedding.

Inspector Joynes said: “This event is never going to be an attempt to solve all the animal welfare issues in Wirral.

“However It is a gesture of goodwill that I hope will make some difference to those dog owners that may be struggling this winter.

“With Christmas upon us I know people will have lots of stresses and strains attempting to ensure they have everything else taken care of.

“Heating, electricity and food bills will be up for many people and it may mean that taking home some bedding and a large bag of food will make that little bit of difference to the dog as well as it's family.

“I know some will say that if people cannot afford to pay for their pets’ needs then they shouldn't keep a dog.

“Of course I agree with that, but this event is simply aimed at providing a little bit of help and assistance for owners that may need it.”
