Police have arrested a man and are appealing for further information after an attempted armed robbery at a shop Moreton.

Officers were alerted at around 9pm on Friday after a call was received reporting three masked men on a scooter had arrived at Best Buy convenience store on Hoylake Road.

They were making threats to the owner and demanding cash.

The raiders made off empty-handed and rode towards the direction of Upton Road.

One of them was reportedly in possession of a pistol-type weapon, possibly with the appearance of being an imitation.

Armed officers were deployed to the area and a full search was conducted.

A 33-year-old man from Woodchurch has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of a firearm.

He has been taken to a police station where he will be questioned by detectives.

A black Ford Focus suspected to have been used to transport one of the suspects has also been seized for forensic enquiries from The Meadow in Woodchurch.

CCTV, forensic and witness inquiries remain ongoing in the area.

Detective Inspector Gary Stratton from Wirral CID said: "The owner of the shop was unhurt but understandably distressed to be threatened with what had the appearance of a firearm, regardless of whether it was real or fake.

"I would appeal to anyone in the Hoylake Road area around 9pm who saw the offence taking place, or any masked men acting suspiciously, to contact police, as any detail could be key to our investigation.

"We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw and can identify a red and white Honda scooter in the area around this time and knows where this vehicle is being stored.

"We have spoken with the owners and staff to offer reassurance but I want to assure all businesses that we will do everything possible to identify all of those involved and bring them to justice.

"We will also be increasing high-visibility patrols in the area to provide further reassurance to the community.”

The men were white, in their 20s, with facial coverings and wearing helmets, and were riding a red and white Honda scooter.

Anyone with information should contact Wirral CID on 0151 777 2267, call 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
