TWO community workers took over the airwaves at Radio Clatterbridge for 20-hours of non-stop broadcasting in aid of breast cancer awareness.
Presenters Ian Grant and Helen-Louise Sestan-Burton hosted every programme from 5am yesterday until 1am today.
The volunteers, who work at Asda in Arrowe Park and Bromborough, wanted to mark the hospital station's 65th birthday and the 20th anniversary of the supermarket's Tickled Pink campaign.
The mammoth broadcast was filled with special guests, including Birkenhead-born comedian Pauline Daniels who shared her story about fighting off breast cancer.
She told listeners: "I'm very lucky.
"I've come out the other side and I’m fine. As long as I’ve got breath in my body I'll carry on banging on about how important a mammogram is and how important it is to check yourself."
Patients and hospital staff also heard various myths about breast cancer dispelled.
Ian and Helen wore a different pink-themed outfit for every hour of their challenge.
The pair also dedicated an hour of the live broadcast to music from 1951 and 1996 - the respective years when Radio Clatterbridge and Tickled Pink launched.
Ian, who joined the station 13 years ago while trying to drum up support for the annual breast cancer fundraiser, told listeners: "I thought I'd get to nine or ten o'clock and want to close my eyes but I think it's just the adrenaline of today.
"It’s been great. Thanks to all of our listeners and all of our guests."
Signing off with the Vanessa Williams' song Save The Best For Last, Helen added: "We could stay here. We're just warming up!"
Clatterbridge Hospital is home to the Wirral Breast Screening Programme.
Meanwhile, Breast Cancer Care, one of the charities to benefit from Tickled Pink, offers patients at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre free advice on how to tie headscarves and use hats and hairpieces.
Radio Clatterbridge is operated by a team of volunteers who give up their time to inform and entertain patients and staff across the Clatterbridge Health Park.
Programmes can be heard on 1386AM (Medium Wave).
