Mersey Ferries will be out of action until the second week of November, it has been revealed.

The Royal Iris was taken off the river last Thursday after suffering mechanical problems with her engine.

It was hoped the vessel would be back in service later this week.

But after further inspections, engineers now estimate four weeks of repair work are needed.

The Snowdrop ‘Dazzle Ferry’ is also out of commission but is expected to return to service earlier than anticipated after a regular maintenance check ahead of the Wirral Loop Line track renewal works in January.

Gary Evans from Mersey Ferries said: “We know that this is disappointing news and we want to see the ferries back on the river as much as everyone else.

“We will be working hard to make sure they return to service as soon as possible and are ready for the forthcoming Wirral track renewal work, as the Mersey Ferries will be one of the transport alternatives cross-river, and for the 2017 season.

“We appreciate that this is frustrating for commuters and tourists and we want to thank them for their cooperation and patience during this challenging time.”

Commuters will be able to use their tickets on Merseyrail with replacement buses being made available between Hamilton Square and Seacombe.
