A MUM of two from West Kirby who was diagnosed with terminal cancer has organised a coffee morning in aid of MacMillan nurses later this week.

Ruth Johnson from West Kirby was diagnosed with non-acute palate liver cancer last October and given 12 months to live.

She has organised a coffee morning at the Ridger in Newton on Friday to say thanks to the MacMillan Nurses who have supported her.

She told the Globe: "We had a coffee morning at the Ridger last year, which raised £1,800 for McMillan and and hopefully it will raise more this time.

"I've had a lot of support from friends and family over the last year.

"This could be the last one I organise, so I hope to raise as much as I can.

"I want to say a huge thank you to the pub’s manager Ian Sharp, who has given me the pub for free on Friday.

"The staff will also be working for nothing. All tea and coffee has been donated for free.

"I've been told by McMillan that we have been noted as one of the biggest coffee mornings in the area.

"I'm hoping as many people as possible can make it on Friday."

Taking place from 11am-3pm, the event will feature a fundraising raffle and bouncy castle.

Pub manager Ian Sharpe told the Globe: "I am delighted to help Ruth again.

"It's a cause that's very close to my heart, because I lost my mum to breast cancer two years ago."

Ruth's friend Laura Stephens has helped organise the event. She said: "I've known Ruth for about 10 years and although there have been massive changes brought on by her treatment, her character hasn't changed.

"She is an amazing person, with a big personality who always makes people smile."

The coffee morning is one of many that will be held across the borough on Friday.

The first official World's Biggest Coffee Morning took place in 1991.

It has gone on to be the biggest fundraising event of its kind, raising more than £165million for people affected by cancer.

The charity says by 2020 almost one in two people will get cancer at some point in their lives so the money raised at Coffee Mornings will ensure those people get the support they need.

This is the seventh year that M&S has been the official partner of Macmillan's World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.
