A NEW weekend Shopmobility hub is to open in New Brighton to assist people with mobility issues and ensure that they can fully enjoy the resort.

The former bowling pavilion at Marine Park has been rejuvenated by the council's Wallasey Constituency Committee and is the third Shopmobility service to be opened in Wirral.

It will become a base to hire out equipment - and the adjoining public toilets will be reopened.

Chairwoman of the committee Cllr Bernie Mooney said: "We are thrilled to have supported the addition of this valuable resource to a thriving tourist location.

"Not only will this help make New Brighton more accessible, but it brings back into use a building that has been stood empty for many years and opens up further toilets for public access at weekends."

Endorsed by the New Brighton Coastal Team, local traders and community groups, the hub secured funding from central government.

Wirral Council's pledge champion for 'building a vibrant tourism economy' Cllr Tony Jones said: "The work of the team is also focused upon celebrating and restoring New Brighton’s heritage, which Marine Park – at more than a century old – is very much part of.

"The idea of bringing the former pavilion back into use as a Shopmobility hub was just too good to pass up and it's great to see the transformation completed."

Welcoming the new service to New Brighton local charity WIRED Shopmobility has provided aids such as wheelchairs and electric scooters for more than 20 years in Liscard and Birkenhead.

The hub will be officially opened by the Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Pat Hackett, on September 27.
