POLICE have issued a new CCTV image of a man wanted in connection with an armed robbery at a petrol station in Moreton.

A robber armed with a knife punched a petrol station assistant during an "appalling attack" in the early hours of Thursday.

Detectives would like to speak to the man in the image above as they believe that he may have information that will assist the investigation.

Officers are appealing for information after the raid at the Shell service station on Hoylake Road in Moreton.

At around 5am a report was received of a man armed with a knife entering the station shop.

He jumped over the counter and punched a staff member before stealing his rucksack and packets of cigarettes.

During the incident the worker sustained a superficial cut to his hand from the knife.

The robber is believed to have made off on foot towards Moreton Cross.

He is white, around 20 years old, with a black moustache and stubble.

He is believed to have been wearing a dark hooded top with his face covered.

CCTV and forensic inquiries are ongoing at the scene.

Wirral Detective Chief Inspector Paul Sutcliffe said: "The investigation is in its early stages and inquiries are being progressed this morning.

"If you were in the area, on foot or driving past, and saw a man matching this description on Hoylake Road around 5am call us immediately.

“Thankfully the member of staff was not more seriously injured - but this was an appalling attack which would have been an extremely distressing experience.

“We are determined to find the man responsible and bring him to justice so provide any details, however small, which could be vital in our investigation."
