HOUSEHOLDERS in Willaston are concerned restoration work on the village hall is damaging its character.
The hall, built at the end of the nineteenth century, is being re-pointed and re-grouted as part of a project which began last month.
The hall's committee chairman said the work is urgently needed because of damage caused in the past by incorrect pointing.

But one nearby resident who asked to remain anonymous said: "The work is unnecessary and it is ruining the building.
"They are making a real mess outside the hall with dust everywhere.
"Local people have raised money for the building by holding things like soup lunches, but it's all been used to pay for this work.
"Any alterations must be in keeping with the area – but what they are doing to this hall is not.
"Years ago they spent thousands of pounds on renovation. There's no need to do any more work.”

Colin Jerrett, chairman of Willaston Memorial Hall committee of trustees, said: "I have heard comments from many people criticising the work.
"The problem is that in small villages like this there are always going to be people who think they know what they're talking about and can do better.
"The contract was put out to tender and trustees engaged the services of a professional architect, experienced in the restoration of old buildings.
"He is closely monitoring progress and ensuring the work is carried out in accordance with the contract and to a good standard.
"Obviously the hall has a very different look at the moment.

"However the building is actually being restored to its original condition and the colour in the joints will darken in due course as it weathers.
"The mortar being removed was incorrectly constituted and had the potential for serious long-term damage to the stonework necessitating the extensive work being undertaken."
