A MOPED rider crashed into a shop in Birkenhead then made off having suffered what police believe were "significant injuries."

Emergency services were called just before 6pm on Tuesday to Grange Road West.

The male rider of the bike had left the scene before police attended, leaving his machine lying in the road.

Despite an extensive search of the area and inquiries with local hospitals officers are yet to trace the man who they believe may have significant injuries and be in urgent need of medical attention.

Inspector Matt Farmer said: "We are becoming increasingly concerned about the wellbeing of the rider.

"Several witnesses have reported the rider leaving the scene with what appears to be a serious head injury so we urgently need to ensure his welfare.
"If you have seen the man or know who he is please contact us immediately."

The road was closed to traffic for a period while police carried out investigations.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or knows of the rider's whereabouts is asked to contact the roads policing team on 0151 777 5708.
