TRANMERE Rovers made it six wins out of their opening seven games with a 1-0 victory against Guiseley at Prenton Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

James Norwood's 41st minute goal was enough to earn Gary Brabin's men all three points and the top spot in the National League after the first month of action.

Rovers started on the front foot and almost took the lead when Andy Cook met Jeff Hughes' cross with a flying header which Guiseley goalkeeper Daniel Atkinson did well to palm away before clawing a Steven Jennings cross off the head of Cook minutes later.

The Superwhites thought they had an early advantage when Connor Jennings latched onto Norwood's clipped pass and finished neatly following a smart turn but it was erroneously ruled out for offside with the former Wrexham man at least two yards onside when the pass was made.

Brabin's side got the goal they deserved just before the interval as Norwood beat the offside trap to race onto Stephen McNulty's pass and crash a shot past Atkinson at the near post.

The game was televised on BT Sport.

In an interview on Rovers website, Brabin said: "It wasn't a classic but it was a good solid professional performance, we kept the ball well and were patient and worthy of the win.

"I'm made up for Nors (James Norwood) to get his goal today.

"He's stopped doing what he's good at in the last couple of games but today he was back at it and looked a real threat.

"We had good chances, scored two goals, one which was incorrectly ruled out for offside, and at the other end Scott Davies hasn't had anything to do."

Tranmere's National League campaign continues with an away game against Aldershot Town at The EBB Stadium on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
