WORK is set to begin on Wirral's latest state-of-the-art fitness suite at the Oval in Bebington.

The Oval will get a £1m upgrade as part of ongoing work to improve leisure facilities in the borough and offer better health and fitness facilities to residents.

The new fitness suite, exercise studio, disabled access and café follow similar redevelopments at West Kirby Concourse and Guinea Gap Leisure Centre in Seacombe.

Councillor Ann McLachlan, cabinet member for leisure, said: "This is the latest step in our programme of improvements, to ensure we can guarantee a state-of-the-art leisure offer right across Wirral.

"Phase-one of work at the Oval will create the new fitness suite and after that we will be creating new exercise studios and a new café and toilets. There will also be accessibility improvements.

"There will be some disruption during the work, but I’d ask people to bear with us as it will be well worth it and result in a leisure centre we can get really excited about."

The council has already invested £2m in other leisure assets in recent years and will invest another £2m for 2016/17.

The Oval will receive £986,000 with a target of increasing revenue, tackling obesity and raising life expectancy in the area.
