TRANMERE Rovers' new season preparations continued with a goalless draw against League Two side Blackpool at Prenton Park last night.

Gary Brabin's squad looked the most likely to win throughout the game with James Norwood and Lee Vaughan coming closest, but could not find their way through the resolute Tangerines defence.

Norwood had the first chance of the evening, racing onto a pass down the left channel but put his shot too close to visiting goalkeeper Sam Slocombe, who denied last season's top scorer with his legs at the near post.

The visitors' first real sight of Scott Davies' goal came 20 minutes in, when Brad Potts met Danny Philliskirk's cross with a fine volley but it was straight at Tranmere's goalkeeper.

Brabin made two changes at half-time, bringing on Liam Ridehalgh and Connor Jennings, which allowed Jeff Hughes to return to a more comfortable central midfield role having started the game at left back.

Kirby saw a fierce drive deflected wide by a Pools defender, winning a corner from which Michael Ihiekwe would have scored had he made better contact with McNulty's header across the face of goal.

Slocombe gratefully clutched the ball to his chest knowing he was fortunate to have his clean sheet intact.

Vassell looked to be Blackpool's likeliest man to break the deadlock and came closest of anyone to opening the scoring with a low shot from 20 yards which hit the post.

Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer rang the changes with 20 minutes remaining but Rovers could not take advantage to find a winning goal.

Mekki's shot forced substitute goalkeeper Kyle Letheren into action before the sticksman was almost caught out by Vaughan's cross, just managing to tip it over the bar before it nestled in the far corner.

With the last chance of the night Norwood's attempted lob was clawed away by Letheren as the game finished goalless.

Rovers' pre-season campaign ends with an away match against AFC Fylde on Saturday afternoon.
