Wallasey MP Angela Eagle could be facing a vote of no confidence by members of her local party, which backs Jeremy Corbyn's leadership.

The motion is expected to be debated on July 22 by Wallasey Constituency Labour Party, its vice chairman said.

Membership has grown from 900 before June 24 to 1,200, according to Paul Davies.

Asked about the no confidence motion, he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: “Well, there is a motion to that effect and I am sure that will be a debate at our next meeting on the 22nd.

"I can’t possibly say what all 1,200 people think – but it’s going to be a very lively debate.

"I don't think people will think, if Angela Eagle wins a contest for leadership without Jeremy Corbyn being on the ballot paper, that's fair.

The Guardian reports Ms Eagle told journalists outside her home this morning that she has submitted her leadership challenge papers with Labour’s general secretary.

The former shadow business secretary said she was standing against the Labour leader because of his inability to do the job.

Labour’s National Executive Committee is due to decide this week whether Mr Corbyn must be re-nominated by MPs in order to run as a candidate.
