WIRRAL'S Race For Life takes place this weekend and its organisers are urging more people to sign up.

Organisers hope 2,900 women will register for the Globe-backed event, taking place in Birkenhead Park on Sunday, June 26, in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The event is followed a week later (Sunday, July 3) by the charity's Pretty Muddy, in which participants follow a 5k obstacle course with added mud, takes place at Brimstage Maze, at 10am. So far, 1,113 are registered.

Rhian Coathup, Race for Life Event Manager at Wirral, said: "We are really looking forward to Race for Life Wirral.

"Lots of ladies have entered already both the 5K and 10K event on Sunday 26 June at Birkenhead Park and our brand new Pretty Muddy event – a 5k obstacle course with an extra helping of mud – on Sunday 3 July at Brimstage!

"And there’s still time to enter.

"Ladies can sign up to Race for Life 5k and 10k until midnight on Friday (June 24) and until midnight on Friday, July 1 for the new Wirral Race for Life Pretty Muddy."

Dance school success

Students and staff at a Wirral dance school are celebrating after making it through to the semi-finals of a National competition.

Complete Works performance school in Port Sunlight took part in That's Showbiz competition at Ellesmere Port Civic Centre last weekend.

The school took 85 of their dancers to the event where they collectively performed eight pieces.

Principals Victoria Charlton and Kim McDonald said: "Our students wowed the panel and were an absolute credit to us both, we are thrilled."

Friends' garden party

The Friends of Hoylake and Meols in Bloom’s annual garden party takes place this Saturday, June 25, from noon to 4pm.

The £2.50 entrance charge includes drinks and cakes donated by local people and businesses.

There will also be a raffle and plant bring-and-buy sale.

Blues and rock performers Like A Hurricane will be at Ashton Park in West Kirby this Sunday as part of its annual concert season.

Performances will take place in the Upper Park Arena from 2pm to 4pm.

An open day for anyone wanting to play bowls will be held on Saturday, July 2, at 1pm, at Peers Bowling Club in St George's Road, Wallasey Village.

Sets of woods are available for the session which starts with a tutorial followed by games with members supporting and helping you.

A vintage fashion show in aid of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity takes place at the Lauries Centre, Claughton Road, Birkenhead this Friday, June 24, at 7.30pm.

West Kirby Sailing Club is inviting readers to try sailing for free this Saturday, June 25.

It doesn't matter if you've never stepped in a boat before, you and your family can get afloat at this friendly club based on the Marine Lake.

Visitors will be taken out for half-an-hour by experienced instructors.

Cemetery walk

The Friends of Rake Lane Cemetery will be conducting a guided walk around Wallasey cemetery to commemorate some of the 300-plus Wallasey men who were lost in the Battle of the Somme.
