MERSEYSIDE Police are appealing for information after a woman was sexually assaulted in New Ferry.

The incident took place in the early hours of this morning.

The victim was found in distress at around 5.00am, close to the New Ferry Bypass by a member of the public.

It is believed that she was picked up by a taxi in Birkenhead Town Centre and raped near to the shoreline before escaping through undergrowth towards the carriageway.

Both police and ambulance services attended and the victim was taken to Arrowe Park hospital, where she has since been discharged.

Detective Sergeant John Harrison from the force’s Unity team said: “The victim is being fully supported by our specially trained officers and this investigation is in the early stages.

“Initially we are looking to speak with any witnesses who saw a woman in distress on or close to the bypass around 5.00am this morning, or saw any suspicious vehicles around this area at the same time."

Anyone with information can call officers in the force's specialist Unity team on 0151 777 1382. Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
