WALLASEY Cub Scouts have joined more than 1,000 others from across England and Wales to celebrate a centenary of adventure.

The celebrations are taking place at a week-long camp at Gilwell Activity Centre from May 28- June 3.

The event, called CubJam is the biggest Cub Scout camp in ten years.

Chief Scout and adventurer Bear Grylls flew in last weekend to meet some of the Cub Scouts.

He said: “I am super proud to be a part of celebrating 100 years of Cub Scouting by visiting over 1,200 buzzing girls and boys at CubJam.

“This event is unique as it gives a chance for Cubs across the UK to meet up and share fun and adventures in a way that only Scouting can.”

The theme for the week-long camp is the Wild West.

Cub Scouts will have the opportunity to try their hand at caving, archery, bungee running, zorbing and motor racing, as well as take part a variety of traditional camp-based activities.

Louise Clover, an organiser the event, said: “It’s been a real challenge organising this event.

“I use lots of my business-based skills to lead, motivate and encourage a team of fantastic adults to make this camp really special for the young people who attend.

“Most people don’t realise how much fun it is being a volunteer with Scouting.”

“It’s great to put my spare time into something that makes such a difference to so many boys and girls. It helps them to believe they can do anything.”

The event is part of Cubs 100 – a year-long programme of events in celebration of the Cubs’ centenary year in 2016.

Over 156,000 Cub Scouts will have the opportunity to get involved with the birthday experience.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, The LEGO Group will be sending the UK’s only LEGO Certified Professional builder, Duncan Titmarsh, along to the event to construct a celebration cake made entirely of LEGO bricks.

The cake will be made up of over 22,000 LEGO bricks as well as 100 LEGO candles and will take an average of 120 hours to build!

Cub Scouting’s ambassador and fellow adventurer Steve Backshall is also attending the camp later in the week.
