DETAILS of the latest ‘Feeding Birkenhead’ campaign have been released today.
The campaign, set up and co-ordinated by Frank Field MP aims to stop hunger among Wirral’s children.
Free meals and fun activities will be provided throughout the May half term for children in Rock Ferry, Tranmere and the North End.
Mr Field said: “Next week marks a year since the town’s terrific voluntary groups, who are the driving force behind the Feeding Birkenhead campaign, first provided free meals for poor children in the holidays.
“Since then the campaign has administered thousands of meals to prevent families on low incomes being hungry, prevented large amounts of good surplus food being thrown to waste, and given poorer children the same opportunities as their richer peers to have fun during the holidays.”
“Let us hope that by the time the next major holiday is upon us, the Government will have agreed to implement our suggestion for using the proceeds from the sugar tax to fund a national programme along these lines.”
The campaign successfully provided free meals and fun activities for 195 children during the Easter holidays.
It did so at a total cost of £6.90 per child.
This builds on the results from the February half term, during which 125 children were provided for at a cost of £8.25 per child.
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger, which Frank chairs, successfully persuaded the Government to introduce a small levy on drinks that are high in sugar content.
It is now asking the Government to earmark a proportion of the proceeds towards a national programme of school holiday food and fun provision.
