Police now believe a man assaulted by a gang armed with a machete was the victim of a targeted attack in Upton.

Officers were called just before 6.30pm to reports that a man had been attacked by a group of six or seven at the junction of Houghton Road and Hoole Road last night.

The 25-year-old viciim was taken to hospital suffering cuts to his back and bruising.

A short time later two men, both aged 40 from Bebington and Upton, were arrested on suspicion of assault and affray.

They were taken to a police station where they are being questioned by detectives.

Inquiries are ongoing in relation to vehicles involved in the incident, although it is now believed that a white Ford Transit van was involved.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Denn from Wirral CID said: "Our inquiries are at an early stage but we are now treating this as a targeted attack.

"Patrols have been increased in the area to provide reassurance to the local community and we would urge anyone with information to come forward, particularly in relation to suspicious persons or vehicles seen in and around the Houghton Road area at 6.30pm.

"The victim is not currently assisting us with inquiries so we are keeping an open mind as to the background and motive for this attack.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call us so we can find those responsible and put them before the courts."
