A WIRRAL schoolgirl who had life-saving surgery will take part in the British Transplant Games again later this year.

Maisie Danher, 10, from Prenton underwent a life-saving liver transplant in 2010, aged four.

She shared her donor liver with an adult recipient, Paul Evans, a businessman from Bournemouth.

Both will come together again at the British Transplant Games at the Echo Arena in Liverpool from July 28-31.

Maisie's mother, Jenny Danher, said: "Maisie and Paul were both saved by one single donor and words cannot express the gratitude we feel towards the family who granted her a second chance at life.

"The Transplant Games are an emotional event as you see first-hand all these amazing people who would not be alive had it not been for their donors.

"Maisie and our family are really looking forward to participating in the Games on our home turf and really hope it gets people talking about organ donation."

The games, which have been held annually since 1978, promote the benefits of transplantation, the desperate need for organ donors and celebrate the many incredible achievements of transplant athletes.

It also now embraces the Donor Family Network and celebrates the many families who have enabled the ‘Gift of Life’ to be fulfilled.

Lynne Holt, a transplant coordinator for more than 30 years, helps organise the event through Transplant Sport, the charity behind the Westfield Health British Transplant Games.

She said: "Transplant Sport desperately want to see the family consent rate rise from 57% to 80% by 2020.

"The only way this can happen, is if families get together and chat about their wishes on organ donation.

"It is so important to let our families know that if we die before them, we want them to support our wish to donate our organs.

"These conversations could save many lives."

The Westfield Health British Transplant Games will take place at various venues including the Echo Arena from 28-31 July 2016.
