A WIRRAL schoolboy was among a group that raised more than £1,600 from an abseil in aid of bowel cancer charity after his grandfather was successfully treated for the disease.

Josh Griffiths was joined by best friend Jay Otter and aunts Jeni and Vicky Bell for the 110ft down Leasowe lighthouse.

The came up with the idea because his 68-year-old granddad Bob Bell is recovering from bowel cancer and liver cancer.

Josh's mum Katie Keane said: "I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their very kind donations and messages of support for the whole team.

"The abseil was a huge success and with your help we have raised £1,605 for Bowel and Cancer Research so far! A huge leap from our original £500 target."

Grandad Bob, a funeral director got a tattoo of Mole, that's his nickname, from Wind in the Willows on his arm to boost the fundraising total.

He was at the bottom of the lighthouse in a spirit of encouragement, along with Josh’s mum Katie Keane, sister Scarlett, stepdad Chris, Nan Sue and a host of supporters.

Deborah Gilbert, chief executive of Bowel & Cancer Research thanked the whole team.

She said: "Josh is an inspiration and the people who have come out to support him have done a brilliant job."
