ON GOOD Friday Birkenhead Town looked to defend their Wirral Junior Cup for a record fifth time against a young Mersey Royal side.

Sadly for Birkenhead it was not to be as Royal ran out 1-0 winners to lift the cup for the first time.

Neston Nomads Reserves bagged a memorable 1-0 win on Saturday on their travels in the Northern Cup Quarter Finals.

Their opponents were Market Drayton Tigers and it took 17-year-old Joe Foster to come off the bench and break the stalemate for Neston in a closely-fought game.

It was cup Quarter Final day in the CWFL with games being played in both the League Cup and Cayzer Shield.

In the CWFL Dee 106.3 League Cup Ellesmere Port FC dispensed of Deva Athletic thanks to goals from Peter Barnett and Ryan Abraham.

An own goal completed the scoring and put to an end a torrid day for Deva.

Another own goal and a Joe Henry brace for Blacon Thistle were just enough as they edged past Lodge Bar 3-2.

Higher Bebington Kelma also had a 3-2 win at the expense of Newton Athletic.

Levi Wooley and Andy Jennings had put Kelma into a 2-0 lead before a Dan Christian brace brought the game level at half time.

A Lee O'Donnell penalty in the second half put pay to Newton’s ambitions and saw Kelma safely through to the semi finals.

Shaftesbury Youth and Lache needed penalties to decide their tie after the game had finished 1-1 after extra time.

Sam Spridgeon had given Lache a half-time lead but that was pegged back by Jacob Drayton in the second half. In the resulting shoot-out Lache held their nerve and won 3-1.

In the CWFL Goals Soccer Centre Chester Cayzer Shield Quarter Finals Woodchurch Athletic needed extra time to see off Eastham Athletic.

Mike Roberts (Eastham) and Lee Dermody (Woodchurch) were the scorers in normal time with the eventual winner coming from Sean Cassidy in extra time to see Woodchurch through 2-1.

Elton Rigger eased past Ellesmere Port Spartans 6-1 with goals from Ben Jones, Wayne Clark 2, Wayne Rigby, Steve Salisbury and Nick Davies.

Ashton will be hoping its their year this year as they make it through to their second Cayzer Shield Semi Final in as many years.

They beat Elton Athletic 4-1 thanks to strikes from Dean Rattcliffe, Ashley Watlin, Paul Gunderson and Lee Reynolds.

Completing the Semi-Final line-up will be Samba after they beat Neston Town 1-0 after extra time.

League action now and Kelsall continue to show true fighting spirit as they fight their way out of the relegation places in the CWFL Queensferry Sports Premier Division.

Adam Crimes hit a hat-trick for them as they disposed of Ellesmere Port Town Reserves 3-0.

Uberlube did not fair as well as they went down 2-1 at home to Whitby Athletic who had brothers Joseph and Ruben Landim on the score sheet to cancel out a Jordan Jones goal for Uberlube.
