POLICE are carrying out forensic examinations to establish who was driving a car that crashed then turned on its roof leaving a teenager with critical injuries earlier this week

Emergency services were called to the accident at Telegraph Road at around 10.15pm on Tuesday.

The car, a red Vauxhall Astra, was found overturned in a field between Mere Lane and the Cottage Loaf pub.

It was understood three people had been in the vehicle, and police at the time believed the driver was an 18-year-old male.

But a police spokesman said tonight: "Our initial investigation indicated that the 18-year-old was the suspected driver.

"However a new allegation has come to light of a fourth person having been in the car.

"Forensic tests are being carried out and we are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to ascertain who was driving.”

The 18-year-old was taken to Aintree University Hospital in a critical condition.

Paramedics treated the two other victims at the scene before taking them to Royal Liverpool Hospital.
