PUPILS and staff at a Wirral primary school have been praised for their commitment to protecting the environment.

Greasby Junior School was presented with its second Eco School Green Flag award by mayor, Cllr Les Rowlands, during a recent visit.

The award recognises the work the school does to encourage everyone in its community to lead an environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

Eco councillors, who are elected each year by their peers, help the school's site manager take metre readings for water and electricity as well as organising litter picking teams and developing plans for the school garden.

Healthy lifestyles are encouraged through monthly ‘Wheelie Walkie Wednesdays’ and 'BikeIT' Breakfasts in the warmer weather as well as the school's healthy tuckshop, ‘Funky Fruits’, which is managed by the Year five children.

There is a wide range of healthy extra-curricular activities for the children to attend, from gardening to judo, and the School Council thoroughly spend their £500 budget making sure playtimes are active and fun.

Adrian Martin, headteacher said: "The mayor spent an hour with staff and students on the school's Eco Council and was extremely impressed by their enthusiasm for and knowledge of the school's work.

"The school is rightly proud of its latest award and I would like to thank the children, staff and volunteer helpers for their continued hard work."
