WIRRAL'S first state-of-the-art youth centre has secured backing from an engineering firm which will help pay for running costs.

The "Hive Youth Zone" was approved by Wirral Council last year and is being built on Exmouth Street in Birkenhead.

Boulting Group is the second company to join a growing group of supporters that has pledged a significant donation to support the facility’s annual running costs of £1million per year.

The project will cost around £6m to complete and annual running costs are estimated at around £1m.

The venue is due to open at the end of this year.

It will offer a huge range of activities for young people including dance, sport, art, music and media studies.

The project has secured founder patron support from Boulting Group, an engineering solutions company, to the tune of £75,000 over three years.

Dave Friar, its international director and executive board member, said: "The moment we heard about Wirral Youth Zone we knew it was exactly the type of relevant investment the young people in this region need.

"We are proud to offer our support to ensure that we can help build a brighter future for young people.

"It will make a huge difference to have this safe and inspiring place where they can discover their talents, build their confidence and self-esteem and aspire to lead healthier and happier lives."

Its general manager Stuart Barnes said: "We are hugely thankful to the Boulting Group for its support towards The Hive.

"Private sector support is vital to the future of Wirral Youth Zone.

"Without their investment, the Youth Zone cannot happen; however we still need more businesses to get behind the project and invest in our city's young people, in their future."
